Subject: Need Help with "Econ Growth and Quality of Life" Course

The following is a request for assistance:

This fall, a new course that a colleague and are developing will be
taught for the first time. The course is called "Economic Growth and the
Quality of Life".
It is a general education course; that is, students taking the course are
not required to have any economics or history. The purposes of the course
are to (a) examine the theory of economic growth (at a fairly simple level),
(b) discuss how economic growth has changed the way in which a typical
person lives, and (c) discuss the benefits and costs of growth.

In developing point b), we plan to examine the growth of incomes, and the
resulting changes in life expectancy, occupations and working environment,
living conditions, etc.

In developing point c), we plan to address such issues as the effects of
population growth, positive and negative effects of technological change,
environmental effects of growth, whether growth leads to long-term natural
resource depletion, etc.

All in all, the basic questions we want to force students to address are:
how are you affected by economic growth? and Does economic growth make you
better off?

I would be grateful if anyone could suggest some suitable readings for
any part of the above. Since the course is still in the construction
stage,
suggestions on other issues that fit the general idea of the course are also
welcome. Reply either on the list or directly to me. Thanks in advance for
any assistance you can provide.
