Tobacco in Economic History, 18th to 21st Centuries
VIIIth Spanish Economic History Association Conference, Santiago de
Compostela
13-16 September, 2005

Panel coordination: Luis Alonso Álvarez (Universidad de A Coruña),
Lina Gálvez Muñoz (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid) and Santiago de
Luxán (Universidad de Las Palmas).

The VIIIth Spanish Economic History Association Conference will take
place in Santiago de Compostela (Spain) from the 13th to the 16th of
September, 2005. Within this context we are organising a B panel on
Tobacco in Economic History, 16th to 21st Centuries, and a
pre-conference in Madrid on the 4th and 5th of March, 2005. There are
enough arguments for explaining the convenience of organising at the
present time an academic meeting on "Tobacco in economic history."
First, the increasing legal demands subscribed by particulars and
institutions against tobacco holdings because of the medical evidence
linking tobacco consumption and particular illnesses. Second, the
legal imputations made against some North American firms by some
lawyers related to big scale smuggling operations pursued within the
European Union fiscal land. And finally, the privatisation and
liberalisation process carried out by several states in the last
decades of their former tobacco monopolies, followed by vertical and
horizontal integration in the European fiscal monopoly areas after
the Treaty of Rome. In Spain, many academic books and articles have
been written in the last ten years about that topic, mainly within
economic history and history fields. In addition, an important
quantity of research has been published in Europe and America about
tobacco, especially within business organisation and consumption
studies. That proliferation of research results calls for a common
work and the establishment of a future research agenda. In fact, our
aim is to analyse in what stage we are in tobacco research and from
that, we would like to establish a future research agenda.

We are interested in papers that cover all range of tobacco related
topics in economic history, such as tobacco cultivation, industry,
technology, fiscal aspects, commercialisation, labour issues,
consumption or tobacco business. Special emphasis is deserved to
comparative studies, both regionally and internationally, as well as
in all industries and economic sectors that were closely related to
tobacco business such as paper, technology or retailing. In order to
avoid dispersion, the chronological limits have been reduced to 18th
to 21st centuries. A possible list of topics includes:
